The African Women In Business Initiative (AWIB) responds to the Bank’s Private Sector Development Strategy emphasis on the role of women in business as well as to calls to empower women entrepreneurs, in particular SMEs, through better access to finance.

Governments, associations / institutions that support the emergence and growth of women-owned SMEs.

Objectives and activities

Objective: the AWIB is created to support women entrepreneurs both technically and financially. The program aims to build capacities of intermediaries to better service women entrepreneurs and to finance pan-African trainings and conferences.


  • Raise awareness among stakeholders and mobilize key players in the field of AWIB promotion;
  • Reinforce the Business Support Provision; and
  • Develop concrete forms of support to enterprise education and entrepreneurship development.

Type and level of funding

Financial assistance is provided in the form of technical and financial support.
