The Asian Investment Facility (AIF) was created in 2010 in line with the objectives of the Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI) and the Regional Strategy for Asian countries.

Who can apply?

Multilateral and national European development finance institution. The project will be eligible if it is considered as a priority by the strategic board of the facility.

Objectives and activities

Objective: The Asian Investment Facility, promotes a green economy through the leverage of additional investments and key infrastructure.


  • Priority focus on climate change relevant and "green" investments.
  • Investment funding in green infrastructure that will limit the emission of CO2 and equivalents and increase resilience to climate change in vulnerable countries. The AIF is the vehicle for leveraging this investment funding.
  • In addition, capital may be provided in particular to SMEs and to social sector investments.

Type and level of funding

2013: Total amount of EU budget contribution: EUR 30 million.

Financial assistance is provided in the form of grants and loans.
