The ESPON 2020 Programme aims at promoting and fostering a European territorial dimension in development and cooperation by providing evidence, knowledge transfer and policy learning to public authorities and other policy actors at all levels. It is administered by the European Commission, DG Regional and Urban Policy.

Objectives and activities

Objective: The objective of the ESPON 2020 Cooperation Programme is to support the reinforcement of the effectiveness of EU Cohesion Policy and other sectoral policies and programmes under European Structural Investment (ESI) funds as well as national and regional territorial development policies, through the production, dissemination and promotion of territorial evidence.

Activities: ESPON is playing a key role within EU Cohesion Policy in support of policy development providing comparable pan-European evidence, analyses and scenarios on territorial dynamics that help regions, cities and larger territories in taking evidence-based decisions on their future development.

Type and level of funding

The budget for 2014-2020 is EUR 48,678,851; with an EU contribution of EUR 41,377,019. Financial assistance is provided in the form of grants.
