FEMIP was created in October 2002 within the European Investment Bank (EIB), following the Barcelona European Council, to stimulate economic growth and private sector development in the Mediterranean region.

Objectives and activities

Objective: The Special FEMIP Envelope (SFE) was set up in 2005 by the EIB to provide loans for private sector operations with a higher risk profile.  The SFE aims at targeting 'the local financial sector, milestone industrial and infrastructure projects and selective initiatives in the tourist sector'.

Activities:

  • Industry, tourism and services: industry and agro-industry, both large-scale investments and SMEs.

Type and level of funding

For the period 2014-2020, a lending envelope of over EUR 9.6 billion will be made available for the Mediterranean partner countries.

Financial assistance is provided in the form of loans and risk capital.
