TOURPACT - Tourism Partnerships for Development

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is promoting responsible corporate citizenship and fostering multi stakeholder partnerships for development. The UNWTO TOURPACT initiative allows the private sector and civil society to partner with the international community to advance a more fair, sustained and balanced growth through tourism.

What is TOURPACT?

Recognizing the potential of tourism as a driver for sustainable development, and in line with the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has created TOURPACT: a framework for Tourism Partnerships for Development.

TOURPACT is a network of stakeholders committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), advancing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through tourism and building a tourism sector that generates social and economic benefits for host communities while contributing to a more green growth.

TOURPACT is a tool for stimulating change, encouraging innovative solutions and adding value to partnerships. The initiative has been inspired by the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest global corporate citizenship initiative dedicated to promote and build social legitimacy of business and markets.

What does TOURPACT aim to achieve?

CREATE a unique platform for dialogue and action, bringing together key global players aiming to achieve the MDGs and advance sustainable development through tourism;

PROMOTE  the leadership of TOURPACT members in the Global Development Agenda;

ENCOURAGE Corporate Global Citizenship.

What does TOURPACT offer?

TOURPACT offers the private sector and the civil society several opportunities to engage in tourism partnerships for development:

CORE BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS are initiatives in which stakeholders use their own business operations locally or globally to contribute to UN goals, including projects that create employment and foster entrepreneurship; contribute to economic growth; implement social, environmental or ethical standards; or provide appropriate and affordable goods and services.

ADVOCACY PARTNERSHIPS are initiatives in which companies and other social actors collaborate with the UN to advance a specific cause or promote dialogue on important issues such as climate change, poverty and education, in order to develop principles or guidelines in support of the broader UN goals, while benefiting businesses and civil society.

PHILANTHROPY PARTNERSHIPS involve a wide array of initiatives in which companies provide financial or in-kind contributions to UN projects. These initiatives focus on strategic alignment with companies contributing to UN efforts in areas related to their core business and expertise.

The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism sets a frame of reference for the responsible and sustainable development of world tourism. It draws inspiration from many similar declarations and industry codes that have come before and it adds new thinking that reflects our changing society at the beginning of the 21st century.

The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism is intended to be a living document. Read it. Circulate it widely.

Partnering with the UN

The 2010 MDG Summit set the scene for a new global scenario, in which private and public sector join hands to make the objectives of the UN Partnerships for Development (MDG 8) a reality.

UNWTO, the UN specialized agency for tourism, is committed to working closely with the private sector and the civil society in maximizing the potential of tourism for development. With TOURPACT, UNWTO is stimulating existing partnerships and exploring innovative approaches to creating relationships that are mutually beneficial and promote a responsible, sustainable and universally accessible development.

By engaging in TOURPACT members will partner with UNWTO while accessing a number of other UN agencies and stakeholders involved in tourism.
