24 October 2013 UN Day 2013: A world more connected, more united
Celebrated every year on 24 October, United Nations Day highlights the work and objectives of the United Nations and its specialized agencies all over the world. UNWTO is the only UN agency with its headquarters in Spain and took part in the official celebrations hosted in the Madrid Town Hall and chaired by the Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel García-Margallo.

27th of September marks the United Nations´ calendar day highlighting tourism, a sector that is driving socioeconomic growth and development all over the world. On World Tourism Day 2013, dedicated to “Tourism and Water – Protecting Our Common Future” in line with the International Year of Water Cooperation, stakeholders called for greater global efforts in water preservation.

The General Debate of the 20th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly has put a spotlight on the link between tourism and air transport policies. Countries attending called for closer coordination between both policies highlighting that too often these interlinked sectors are dissociated (Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe, 28 August).

26 August 2013 International tourism demand exceeds expectations in the first half of 2013
International tourist arrivals grew by 5% during the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012, reaching almost 500 million, according to data just released by UNWTO. Growth was above the projection made at the beginning of the year (+3% to +4%) and is also exceeding the trend of the UNWTO long-term outlook Tourism Towards 2030 (+3.8% a year).

The developmental impact and potential of tourism was highlighted at the World Trade Organization’s Fourth Global Review of Aid for Trade in Geneva. At the meeting, UNWTO emphasized the increasingly prominent role of tourism in developing countries, particularly Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and called for increased support for tourism in international aid for development (Geneva, Switzerland, 8-10 July 2013).
12 July 2013 Delivering new tourism solutions: UNWTO partners with top Spanish engineering company
Research, best practices and new methodologies for tourism development are at the centre of an agreement signed between UNWTO and Spanish public company ISDEFE (Ingeniería de Sistemas para la Defensa de España). This agreement aims at developing pilot projects based on a range of subjects including connectivity, energy in tourism, among others.
